Slate | Rocks and Threads Trunk Show Summer 2016

I took a drive down to  Redondo Beach Riviera over the weekend to a store called Kelly Designs. It's a place that will make the boho goddess in you will rejoice that such a magical and elegant place exists. It's the kind of place that ever corporate lifestyle  furnishing house get's their inspiration from. Si mami , it is that good.

Upon entering the store there's a wonderful co-op vibe going with the fashion-curation house Rocks and Threads pulling clothing and accessories, for the more luxe of bohemian clientele.

Today was a particularly special day as it was their end of summer Trunk Show with emerging swimwear line SLATE. In an impromptu manner I spoke to the owner and designer of Slate Jessica Liao and Rocks and Threads owner Christy Castro-Kahn to get the scoop on their lines, entrepreneurial struggles, and what's to come.

SLATE | ROCKS AND THREADS interview by Priscilla Ford

PF: What made you start this brand?

SL: I always wanted to create my own (clothing) line, and eventually gravitated towards swimwear and the whole lifestyle around it. I never found anything that was a good fit on me, So I wanted to give something better to everyone else who was having similar problems.

PF: What kind of challenges did you have with starting up this line?

SL: Fit, it's a lot different than clothes. And networking in swim as well.

PF: What are you trying to convey with your brand?

SL: Simple, modern, classic. An elevated look that everyone can reach for. It should be every girls go-to.

PF:What is your goal, be it creative or with your company objective?

SL: I want girls and everyone to take it and make it their own, because there are so many styles out there.

PF: What was behind the idea to collaborate with Rocks and Threads (Kelly i Design Store) for this trunk show?

SL: Because this place is awesome!

RT: I love how contemporary it is, and the shades are super unique. I think it fits well with our works traveler girl. I love her asymmetrical cuts. It embodies a modern look.

PF:Who reach out to who first?

RT:We actually met through a mutual friend in the business. It was when I first started my pop up shop (Before she found herself nestled into Kelly Designs store), and it kind of blossomed from there.

PF:As a retail store reaching into the lifestyle scene, and getting your name out there, what do you think are the most challenging aspects?

RT: Establishing a name for yourself. Especially in an area where it's so up and coming. Really standing out and giving your customers what their looking for, and finding the right accessories

PF:When is the next trunk show?

RT: To be announced!

What's going to be hot this fall in the world of Boho luxe lifestyle?

RT: Neutrals colors, a very plain pallet with lots of textures. With fall we're finding inspiration with world travel, so luxe silk and cashmere.
